Geneva AM has released her highly anticipated album titled Pikipiki, which translates to “to climb” in te reo Māori. The album offers a vibrant mix of electronic dance music that aims to uplift and unify listeners. From the very first track, Geneva AM, whose full name is Geneva Alexander-Marsters, welcomes audiences with a warm greeting, setting a positive tone for the entire project.

The album opens with the phrase “Nau mai, haere mai,” inviting listeners into a soundscape filled with rich synths and a steady kick drum. Geneva AM emphasizes the importance of community and collective empowerment in her music. In an interview with Under the Radar, she stated, “Now more than ever we need to unify and believe in our collective power to make positive change.” This message resonates throughout Pikipiki, which balances feel-good anthems with reflective and complex lyrics.

Exploring Complex Themes Through Dance

Tracks such as “Urban Planning” highlight the contrast between lighthearted melodies and deeper sentiments. With lyrics reflecting on urban life through a nostalgic lens, Geneva AM sings, “The motorway was an awa [river] / In the museum they put my waka / I feel at home in the city / I got my Tipuna [ancestors] with me.” These lines capture a sense of belonging while addressing the complexities of modern life.

Geneva AM’s musical style has evolved from her previous work with the band SoccerPractise, where she explored intricate electronic rhythms. In Pikipiki, the production leans towards simplicity, allowing the tracks to breathe and flow naturally. For instance, in “Meet Again,” her rich vocal delivery transports listeners to a euphoric “dancefloor in heaven,” creating a relatable and humorous connection.

The album features an interactive moment where Geneva AM encourages listeners to participate. In the song “Tutira Mai Ngā Iwi,” she playfully invites her audience to join in, demonstrating her ability to engage directly with fans. This interactive quality enhances the overall experience, making the listener feel included in the celebration.

Diverse Musical Influences and Collaborations

also showcases an array of musical influences and collaborations. One standout track, “Toitū Te Tiriti,” features the Ngā Whetu Ensemble, providing a rousing neo-classical backdrop that contrasts with the electronic elements prevalent throughout the album. Additionally, a garage rock rendition of the classic “Pokarekare Ana” is reimagined with backing from notable artists including Ruby Walsh and Fiona Campbell, adding fresh harmonies to a beloved piece.

The latter half of the album continues to explore electronic genres, featuring a drum and bass cover of Hirini Melbourne’s “Purea Nei” and a house track titled “Tipuna Rākau,” which translates to “ancestor tree.” Geneva AM elaborated on this song, describing it as a celebration of being “the seeds of our ancestors.” It is one of her most uplifting compositions, complemented by a visually striking video that further expresses her artistic vision.

The album culminates with the title track, “Pikipiki,” where Geneva AM collaborates with artists including Samara Alofa and Mara TK. Their combined vocals create a soaring harmony that mirrors the album’s uplifting intent, leaving listeners inspired and ready to embrace the music.

Listeners can experience more of Geneva AM’s work on Music 101, where host Tony Stamp will feature tracks from Pikipiki on August 16, 2023. With its blend of danceable beats and poignant lyrics, Pikipiki stands as a testament to the power of music in fostering connection and positivity.
