Gisborne Choral Society Welcomes New Singers After Global Success

The **Gisborne Choral Society** (GCS) is set to resume rehearsals on Monday, fueled by recent achievements in the choral music scene. The excitement stems from the remarkable performances of the **New Zealand Youth Choir** at two prestigious international competitions. Judged **Choir of the World** at the **Llangollen International Eisteddfod** in Wales and winner of the **Grand Prix of Nations** at the **European Choir Games** in **Aarhus, Denmark**, the youth choir has inspired local musicians.
This resurgence in choral enthusiasm is further amplified by the recent release of the film **Tinā**, directed by **Miki Magasiva**, along with the documentary series **Choir Games**. These productions offer valuable insights into the vibrant world of choral singing, a passion that has sustained GCS for nearly **60 years**. “We love to sing,” said **Mary-Jane Richmond**, president of GCS, expressing the society’s enduring commitment to music.
As GCS prepares for its upcoming season, the organization is actively inviting new members to join. The choir focuses on skill-building for singers of all levels, providing a supportive environment that fosters growth and collaboration. Participants can expect to enhance their vocal abilities while contributing to a rich tradition of choral music.
The chorus has a long history of performances and community engagement, and it aims to continue this legacy through its inclusive approach. GCS encourages individuals who enjoy singing, regardless of experience, to consider becoming part of this vibrant musical community.
Richmond noted that the recent successes of the New Zealand Youth Choir serve as a reminder of the joy and fulfillment that come from choral singing. The GCS aims to replicate this spirit while nurturing local talent and fostering a sense of belonging among its members.
In addition to welcoming new singers, GCS plans to participate in various local events throughout the upcoming year, promoting choral music and its benefits to the community. The society’s commitment to excellence and passion for music remains steadfast, ensuring that it continues to be a cornerstone of the Gisborne arts scene.
With the new season on the horizon, the Gisborne Choral Society is poised to embark on an exciting journey, inviting all who share a love for singing to join them in making music together.
