Guru Dutt’s Iconic Films to Return on Big Screens in August

The centenary celebration of legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt will bring his iconic films back to the big screen, as over 250 cinemas across India prepare to showcase newly restored versions of his masterpieces from August 8 to 10, 2024. This retrospective marks a significant moment for film enthusiasts, allowing audiences to experience classics such as Pyaasa, Aar Paar, and Chaudhvin Ka Chand in enhanced 4K clarity.

The initiative, organized by Ultra Media in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), was celebrated at a special event attended by Dutt’s granddaughters, Karuna Dutt and Gouri Dutt, along with notable filmmakers including R Balki and Sudhir Mishra. During the gathering, Karuna expressed joy at the ongoing remembrance of her grandfather’s work. “We are very happy that even after so many years, his work and films are being remembered,” she said, highlighting the excitement of seeing these films on the big screen again.

Gouri echoed her sentiments, describing the occasion as deeply emotional. “It is a very sentimental moment for the family because even now, when we meet, everyone remembers him with a lot of love,” she noted. This act of celebration not only honors Guru Dutt’s legacy but also reinforces the emotional connection that audiences and family members share with his work.

Filmmaker R Balki emphasized the importance of this initiative, explaining that it provides a fresh opportunity for younger audiences. “Many people, including young ones who haven’t discovered it, will sit in a theatre and watch this film, it will teach, it will give a new perspective on how the world was,” he remarked. His words reflect a broader hope that this retrospective will inspire a new generation of film lovers.

Sudhir Mishra added his personal perspective, stating, “Everything that we do is because of him. So, I mean, it’s fantastic. His work has been restored.” His comments underline the profound impact Dutt had on filmmakers and the cinematic landscape in India.

Sushilkumar Agrawal, CEO of Ultra Media, reiterated the importance of showcasing these films on the big screen, noting that many viewers lack opportunities to see Guru Dutt’s work in cinemas. “That’s why this festival is held,” he said. The event aims to ensure that these classic films reach a wider audience, allowing them to experience the artistry and narrative depth that Guru Dutt is celebrated for.

Prakash Magdum, Managing Director of NFDC, reflected on the significance of the restoration project, which is part of the broader National Film Heritage Mission. This initiative aims to digitize and restore Indian films, ensuring that the works of great artists like Guru Dutt are preserved for future generations. “We are celebrating his 100th birthday. His six films are being restored,” he stated.

The retrospective will feature a carefully curated selection of Dutt’s work, with Pyaasa (1957) leading the lineup. Often regarded as one of the greatest Indian films, it tells the story of a disillusioned poet navigating a materialistic society, with memorable music and deep emotional resonance. Another highlight, Aar Paar (1954), is a stylish Bombay noir that combines romance and suspense into a compelling narrative.

Actress Divya Dutta expressed her enthusiasm for the screenings, stating, “For me, Guru Dutt ji is a master class. I love his movies and I am so delighted and happy that those classics are being shown on the big screen.” Her appreciation reflects the affection many hold for Dutt’s cinematic legacy.
