Josh O’Connor Shines in Dark Comedy Murder Mystery “Wake Up Dead Man”
In the latest installment of the acclaimed murder mystery series, “Wake Up Dead Man,” audiences see a blend of dark humor and gripping storytelling unfold in the fictional small town of Chimney Rock, New York. The film, which stars Josh O’Connor as Father Jud Duplenticy, features a plot thick with tension and intrigue, leading to a shocking murder that requires the talents of famed detective Daniel Craig.
Duplenticy, a former boxer with a troubled past, seeks redemption by joining the priesthood. However, a violent incident leaves him with a broken jaw and on thin ice with his superiors. Desperate to avoid being jailed or defrocked, he requests a second chance from Bishop Langstrom, played by Jeffrey Wright. The Bishop, with a knowing smile, sends him to Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude, a struggling parish under the dubious leadership of Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, portrayed by Josh Brolin.
As Duplenticy arrives in Chimney Rock, he quickly realizes that Wicks’ controversial sermons and aggressive tactics are driving away the congregation. The Monsignor’s hostility is palpable, as he accuses the young priest of trying to usurp his position. Despite this, Duplenticy remains determined to foster a more welcoming atmosphere, engaging with local residents, including lawyer Vera Draven, played by Kerry Washington, and doctor Nat Sharp, portrayed by Jeremy Renner.
The film’s narrative takes a dark turn when Wicks collapses and dies under mysterious circumstances during a service. Local police chief Geraldine Scott, played by Mila Kunis, is left to unravel the mystery of his death. What initially appears to be a stabbing raises questions about the true nature of the crime, prompting the involvement of detective Benoit Blanc, known for his sharp wit and analytical prowess.
Directed by Rian Johnson, “Wake Up Dead Man” is a continuation of the franchise that began with “Knives Out” in 2019, followed by “Glass Onion” in 2022. Johnson infuses the film with an Agatha Christie-style mystery while also weaving in elements of Edgar Allan Poe and John Dickson Carr. The film explores deeper themes of faith, morality, and the struggle for redemption, all wrapped in sharp dialogue and dark humor.
The cinematography enhances the film’s darker tone, making it visually distinct from its predecessors. The ensemble cast, particularly O’Connor and Glenn Close, who plays Martha Delacroix—an essential figure in the church’s operations—delivers standout performances that capture the complexities of their characters.
As the story unfolds, Duplenticy’s efforts to save the church and its community lead to a confrontation with Wicks, culminating in a dramatic and fatal encounter. This tension drives the plot forward, engaging viewers in a web of deceit and desperation that keeps them guessing until the final moments.
“Wake Up Dead Man” is now screening in select cinemas and will be available on Netflix starting December 12, 2023. With its intricate plot and rich character development, the film promises to be a captivating addition to the murder mystery genre, showcasing both the talents of its cast and the creative vision of its director.
