Temuka Art Guild Launches Fourth Annual Christmas Pop-Up Gallery
The Temuka Art Guild has opened its fourth annual pop-up gallery on King Street, showcasing a diverse collection of artworks just in time for the Christmas season. Co-organiser Sandra Kelly confirmed that as long as the space remains unoccupied, the pop-up shop will continue to be a beloved fixture for holiday shoppers.
This year’s gallery features the work of 12 local artists, many of whom have gained international recognition. The exhibition includes approximately 150 paintings, which will be continually updated as pieces are sold. Each artist contributes to the collection at their own pace; for instance, Anne Gregerson is known for creating up to 200 artworks annually, while Kelly herself has produced just two this year.
Kelly emphasized that the value of an artwork is not determined by the speed of its creation, but rather by the extensive training and experimentation that each artist undergoes throughout their careers.
Celebrating Local Talent and Legacy
The pop-up also pays tribute to the late John Kelman, a prominent Milford artist. The guild possesses a significant collection of his work, and each year they frame and display a selection of his pieces, ensuring his legacy continues to resonate within the community.
Over the years, the pop-up has attracted visitors specifically eager to see the exhibition, many of whom subsequently explore the local café scene. “People come to town just to visit the pop-up before heading off for a coffee,” Kelly noted. She attributes the gallery’s popularity to the “high calibre of artwork” on display.
This year’s pop-up shop operates six days a week, open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and remains closed on Sundays.
The Temuka Art Guild’s initiative not only supports local artists but also enriches the cultural landscape of the region, making it a must-visit destination this holiday season.
