Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins Hosts Fundraiser for Melanoma Awareness

Renowned streamer Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins is spearheading a 24-hour charity gaming event called Gaming For Cause on September 19, 2024, aimed at raising awareness for melanoma. The initiative seeks to educate viewers on the importance of early detection of skin cancers, particularly through regular mole checks. Partnering with skincare brand La Roche-Posay, the event will feature prominent content creators engaging in games like Fortnite and Marvel Rivals, while sharing vital information about melanoma, a type of skin cancer that affects a broader age demographic than many other cancers.
During a recent interview, Blevins emphasized the pressing need for awareness, stating, “There’s a lot of, unfortunately, to say this: cancers that are rising in all groups, at a much younger age.” He highlighted his personal connection to this cause, having been diagnosed with melanoma in March 2024. Following his initial diagnosis, he discovered a second instance of skin cancer. “The first melanoma was on the bottom of my foot, and the second one was on my thigh,” he explained. Blevins noted that even limited sun exposure can lead to serious health issues, particularly in regions like Florida where he resides.
Leveraging Gaming for Health Awareness
Gaming serves as a unique platform for reaching audiences who may typically overlook public health messaging. Blevins believes that Fortnite offers an ideal venue for this fundraiser. He noted, “People call it a children’s game, but I meet fans every day that are in their mid-20s who watched me for the last six or seven years.” This demographic shift shows that many long-time players are now adults, making the game an effective medium for conveying important health information.
The event will utilize the playful theme of “skins” in both Fortnite and Marvel Rivals to reinforce the campaign’s message. Blevins explained how the hashtag “Save Your Skin” aligns perfectly with the gaming experience. “We’re tying that together… it should be good,” he said, indicating a fun, engaging approach to a serious topic.
Blevins also addressed the potential responsibilities of game publishers like Epic Games in promoting health awareness. While he expressed hope that companies could engage in similar charitable partnerships, he acknowledged the complexities involved. “It’s a great question. Should these companies be raising awareness for anything?” he pondered, suggesting that such initiatives often depend on the interests of company leadership.
Engaging the Audience and Raising Funds
The Gaming For Cause event will feature various gaming modes, including competitive play in Marvel Rivals. Blevins plans to strike a balance between fun gameplay and serious discussions about melanoma. “I’ve always struggled with balancing having fun and remembering what I’m doing it for,” he admitted, pointing to the challenges of maintaining focus during charity streams.
On the day of the event, dermatologist Dr. Daniel Sugai will join the livestream to provide expert advice on melanoma detection. Blevins stated that 100% of donations will benefit the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), funding free health checks through local NGOs to promote early detection and prevention of melanoma.
Blevins encouraged viewers to support the event through various means. “Word of mouth is so important… sharing the stream can be just as effective, if not more effective, than donating,” he said. Nevertheless, he welcomed any contributions, no matter how small.
As melanoma rates continue to rise globally, Blevins hopes that events like Gaming For Cause will demonstrate the potential of gaming as a platform for public health messaging. He concluded with a powerful takeaway, stating, “An hour-long appointment could save your life. And it’s definitely worth it.”
Gaming For Cause will commence on September 19, 2024, at 10:00 EST (15:00 BST), streaming live on Ninja’s YouTube and Twitch channels. For more details on how to donate and follow the countdown to the event, visit the Gaming For Cause website.
