Apple Launches New Watches but Keeps Key Chipset Detail Hidden

Apple recently unveiled its latest smartwatch lineup, including the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch SE 3. During the presentation, a notable detail regarding the chipset used in these devices was subtly highlighted, raising questions among potential buyers.
The new Apple Watch SE 3, priced at $249 (approximately £259 / AU$399), stands out as the most affordable option in the new range. Despite its lower price, it offers significant improvements over its predecessor, the Apple Watch SE 2. Key features include the ability to play media directly on the watch, fast charging, and enhanced AI capabilities courtesy of watchOS 26. Notably, the SE 3 also supports hands-free gesture controls, making it competitive with the higher-end models.
One critical aspect that emerged during the presentation was that the Apple Watch SE 3 houses the same S10 chipset found in the Apple Watch Series 10. Amanda Santangelo, the Apple Watch product manager, emphasized that the SE 3 contains Apple’s “most powerful” watch chipset. This revelation implies that the Series 11 and Ultra 3 models retain the same chipset as their previous versions, the Series 10 and Ultra 2.
While Apple did not explicitly draw attention to this detail, a review of the product specifications on the Apple Store confirms that both the Series 11 and Ultra 3 utilize last year’s processors. This may not significantly impact users who are purchasing their first Apple Watch or upgrading from older models. However, for those considering an upgrade from the previous year’s models, it is important to recognize that the processing capabilities remain unchanged.
The new models do offer enhancements in terms of display and features, including 5G LTE connectivity and improved battery life. These upgrades may appeal to users looking for the latest technology in smartwatch capabilities. Still, the hidden chipset detail could influence the purchasing decision for tech-savvy consumers who prioritize processing power.
Apple’s product launch also introduced other innovations, including the much-anticipated iPhone 17 Pro and the third-generation AirPods Pro. However, the absence of significant updates on the AirPods Pro 3 case during the livestream left some viewers wanting more information.
As Apple continues to release new products, the tech community remains attentive to how these developments will impact user experience and market competition. The decision to keep certain details understated in product presentations may reflect a strategic approach to maintaining consumer interest while balancing expectations surrounding technological advancements.
