Auckland Mansion of Sir Bob Owens Sold for Over $9 Million

The Auckland mansion formerly owned by transport magnate Sir Bob Owens has been sold to foreign buyers for over $9 million. The sale, revealed by OneRoof, marks a significant transaction in the New Zealand real estate market, occurring more than 25 years after Sir Bob’s passing. His widow, Lady Owens, listed the property located on Victoria Avenue at the bottom of Remuera’s prestigious “Golden Mile” in March 2024.
Interest in the four-bedroom home was notably high, according to Gary Wallace, the listing agent from Bayleys. He stated that while several offers were received, many did not align with the family’s expectations. Eventually, a deal was finalized with an overseas buyer, but it required approval from the Overseas Investment Office. This approval was granted last month, following a three-week assessment period.
The decision to sell the mansion comes as part of a broader trend in New Zealand’s property market, where foreign investment has been a topic of considerable discussion. The approval process for foreign buyers is designed to ensure that investments contribute positively to the local economy and housing market.
Lady Owens’ decision to sell reflects ongoing changes in the property landscape of Auckland, where high-value properties continue to attract international interest. The sale of this mansion not only signifies a personal transition for the Owens family but also illustrates the dynamic nature of real estate in the region.
As Auckland continues to evolve, the implications of such high-profile sales will be closely watched by both local and international investors. The strong interest in premium properties, particularly in sought-after areas like Remuera, indicates a robust demand for luxury homes despite fluctuating market conditions.
