Doha Set to Launch Inaugural FIP Asia Padel Cup in October

Doha will host the inaugural edition of the FIP Asia Padel Cup, a significant tournament for national teams in the region, from October 17 to 24, 2023. This event marks a pivotal moment for the sport of padel in Asia and is organized by the International Padel Federation (FIP) in collaboration with the Qatar Tennis Federation (QTF) and Padel Asia.
Structure of the Tournament
The tournament will unfold in two distinct phases. The first phase, known as Phase 2, will take place from October 17 to 19. It will feature 17 teams ranked from 5th to 21st in the Asia-Oceania region. These teams will be divided into four groups: three groups will consist of four teams each, and one group will have five teams. The top team from each group will advance to the final stage.
The second phase, titled Final 8, will occur from October 20 to 24. This phase will include the four teams that qualify from the first stage alongside the continent’s top four ranked teams. Matches will be held at the prestigious Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, a fitting venue for this landmark event.
Statements from Key Officials
Tareq Zainal, President of Padel Asia and Tournament Director, expressed pride in hosting this inaugural tournament in Qatar. He stated, “We are proud to host the first edition of the FIP Asia Padel Cup in Qatar. This tournament represents more than just a competition; it is a celebration of ambition and the tremendous growth of padel across Asia.” Zainal emphasized the significance of Doha as a city that has embraced the sport enthusiastically.
Luigi Carraro, President of the FIP, highlighted the importance of Doha as a central location for padel. He remarked, “The FIP Asia Padel Cup takes place in Doha, a symbolic location for padel, because it is precisely here that our beloved sport gained the scale, vision, and ambition that have brought us to where we are today.” Carraro also expressed gratitude to the QTF for their support and forward-thinking approach in organizing world-class sporting events.
This inaugural tournament is expected to attract significant attention, showcasing the growing popularity of padel in the region and offering a platform for emerging talent in the sport. As the preparations continue, excitement builds for what promises to be a memorable week for athletes and fans alike.
