Family Remembers Caiden MacGibbon on His 8th Birthday

Today marks what would have been the 8th birthday of Caiden MacGibbon, a young boy whose vibrant spirit and love for life continue to resonate with his family. Instead of a birthday celebration, his family in Auckland is poignantly reflecting on their memories nearly a year after losing him to cancer.
Caiden was diagnosed with an inoperable brain cancer known as stage four Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG/DIPG) in 2022, when he was just five years old. This rare and aggressive form of cancer left his family grappling with the harsh realities of his condition. Tragically, Caiden passed away on the morning of November 20, 2024, surrounded by loved ones in their home, alongside a chorus of over 100 birds, his cherished pets.
Creating Lasting Memories
Throughout his short life, Caiden was known for his infectious smile and playful spirit. His mother, Jasmine MacGibbon, recalls how he would flap his arms like wings whenever he was excited, a gesture that brought joy to those around him. This vibrant expression of happiness is now a cherished memory for Jasmine, who finds comfort in the presence of birds—each sighting reminding her of her son.
In the face of this profound loss, Jasmine and her family have chosen to celebrate Caiden’s life by sharing their story and raising awareness about childhood cancers. They hope to inspire others to support research into treatments and cures for these devastating diseases. The family’s journey underscores the importance of community and the impact of collective efforts in fighting cancer.
A Legacy of Love
Jasmine describes her son as a unique individual who brought light into their lives. As they navigate their grief, she often reflects on the joy Caiden brought to them and the lessons learned from his bravery. The family has received overwhelming support from their community, which has been instrumental in helping them cope with their loss and honor Caiden’s memory.
As they remember Caiden on what would have been his birthday, his family is filled with a mix of sorrow and gratitude. The love and memories they hold dear continue to strengthen their bond and remind them of the joy that Caiden brought into their lives.
In a world often overshadowed by the challenges of illness, the MacGibbon family exemplifies resilience and love, serving as a reminder of the importance of cherishing every moment spent with loved ones.
