Former Black Fern Becky Wood Featured in Groundbreaking Firefighter Calendar
A former student of Mahurangi College, Becky Wood, has been selected to grace the cover of New Zealand’s inaugural all-female firefighter calendar. This initiative, known as the Wāhine Toa Firefighter Calendar, aims to celebrate the strength and femininity of women in uniform while raising funds for a worthy cause.
Wood, a professional firefighter based in Takapuna, grew up in Warkworth before embarking on her career in the fire service. Her impressive background also includes playing lock for the Black Ferns, New Zealand’s renowned women’s rugby team. Now, she joins 12 other women from nine fire stations across the country to showcase their dedication and pride in this unique calendar.
Fundraising for Breast Cancer Care
The calendar, priced at $20, will direct all proceeds to Breast Cancer Care, supporting vital services for those affected by the disease. The collaboration of these women emphasizes their commitment not only to their profession but also to the community they serve.
“This calendar celebrates the strength, pride, and femininity of our wāhine in uniform,” Wood stated. “We are excited to show the diversity and capability of women in firefighting roles.”
In a parallel effort, New Zealand’s more traditional male firefighter calendar returns this year, with proceeds benefiting the men’s mental health movement, Movember. This dual initiative highlights the importance of mental health awareness alongside the focus on breast cancer awareness.
How to Purchase
For those interested in supporting these initiatives, the all-female calendar is available for purchase online at Breast Cancer Care. The male firefighter calendar can be found at Kiwifirefighterscalendar.co.nz.
Both calendars are not only a celebration of the firefighting community but also serve as a reminder of the ongoing need for awareness and support for health issues affecting both men and women. Through their efforts, Wood and her fellow firefighters are making a significant impact, showcasing the power of unity and purpose within their ranks.
