Jaiswal’s 173 Leads India to 318-2 Against West Indies
India’s opener Yashasvi Jaiswal played a commanding innings, scoring an impressive 173 not out, steering the team to a formidable first-innings total of 318 for 2 on the first day of the second Test against the West Indies. The match took place at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on July 7, 2023, as India aimed to complete a series sweep.
After winning the toss, India opted to bat first, and Jaiswal quickly made his mark. He formed a crucial partnership with Sai Sudharsan, contributing to a significant second-wicket stand of 193 runs. Sudharsan scored a solid 87 runs before falling to Jomel Warrican, leaving Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, who was on 20, at the crease as the day concluded.
Jaiswal Dominates the Day
This marks Jaiswal’s seventh Test century in just his 26th match, a remarkable achievement since his debut in the West Indies in 2023, where he scored 171. The 23-year-old left-hander celebrated his milestone by raising his bat and gesturing to the crowd, who responded with loud applause.
Jaiswal’s innings showcased his aggressive style as he struck pace bowler Jayden Seales for three boundaries in the first over after lunch, bringing his fifty to the scoreboard. He continued to play confidently, hitting regular boundaries and keeping the West Indies bowlers under pressure.
Sudharsan also demonstrated his skills, reaching his fifty with a four off Khary Pierre. Despite a dropped catch by Jomel Warrican, Sudharsan remained focused on his innings until being trapped lbw, just shy of his first Test century.
Strong Start for India
India’s innings began positively with KL Rahul and Jaiswal putting together an opening partnership of 58 runs. Rahul scored a brisk 38 runs before being stumped by wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach off Warrican’s bowling. His aggressive batting included successive boundaries that energized the crowd early in the match.
Jaiswal’s elegant straight drive off Anderson Phillip delighted the home fans, who are hopeful for another substantial victory. As spin was introduced in the 15th over, Pierre bowled with precision, but the Indian batsmen maintained their offensive approach.
With the match progressing, India looked to build on their previous innings victory, entering this match unchanged. The West Indies, under the leadership of Roston Chase, face the challenge of avoiding a second consecutive Test series loss following their 3-0 defeat to Australia.
As the second day unfolds, India appears to be in a strong position, with Jaiswal leading the charge in a match that could further solidify his reputation in Test cricket.
