Jaiswal’s 173 Not Out Leads India to 318-2 Against West Indies
In a commanding display, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored an impressive 173 not out, propelling India to a formidable first-innings total of 318-2 on the opening day of the second Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on March 15, 2024. This performance puts India in a strong position to sweep the two-match series after winning the first Test.
Choosing to bat first, the Indian team showcased their dominance throughout the day. Jaiswal’s stellar innings included a remarkable 193-run partnership for the second wicket with Sai Sudharsan, who contributed 87 runs before being dismissed. The partnership not only set the tone for the innings but also demoralized the West Indies bowling attack.
Jaiswal’s Milestone Achievements
Jaiswal’s innings marked his seventh Test century, achieved in just his 26th match. He has now recorded five scores of 150 or more in his Test career, having made a notable debut with 171 runs in the West Indies in 2023. As he celebrated his century with a heart gesture and kisses to the crowd, it was clear that he was in great form.
In the latter half of the day, Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill, who was on 20 at the close of play, continued to build the score, with Jaiswal looking particularly fluent. He reached his half-century by hitting pace bowler Jayden Seales for three boundaries in the first over after lunch, maintaining a steady flow of runs.
Sudharsan, aiming for his first Test century, faced a close call when a catch was dropped by Jomel Warrican at short mid-wicket. Despite his efforts, he fell to an lbw decision off Warrican shortly after reaching his fifty.
Strong Start and Tactical Decisions
The Indian innings began with a brisk 58-run opening partnership between KL Rahul and Jaiswal. Rahul, who scored 38 runs, was aggressive in his approach, striking successive boundaries off Seales before being stumped by wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach off Warrican’s bowling. His early dismissal did not deter Jaiswal, who continued to find gaps in the field.
As the spin bowling was introduced in the 15th over, Khary Pierre bowled with a tidy line, but Jaiswal remained unfazed, showcasing his ability to tackle spin effectively. Rahul had earlier taken on Pierre, hitting the first six of the match, but his ambitious attempts ultimately led to his dismissal.
India entered this match unchanged from their previous victory, while the West Indies, under the leadership of Roston Chase, aimed to avoid a second consecutive Test whitewash after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Australia at home. As the match progresses, all eyes will be on whether India can capitalize on their strong position and secure a series victory.
