Kiwi Writer Explores Life in London: From Flat Whites to Adventures

Lillie Rohan, a former entertainment writer for the New Zealand Herald, has embarked on a journey to explore life as a Kiwi expat in London. In her debut column for Canvas magazine, she candidly shares her experiences and reflections on the challenges and joys of living in the British capital.
Upon arriving in London, Rohan admits to grappling with mixed feelings about the city. “London’s a sh**hole. It’s also the greatest city in the world,” she reflects, highlighting the city’s dual nature. This sentiment resonates with many expatriates who find themselves torn between the vibrant energy of London and its more frustrating aspects.
At the age of 27, Rohan felt it was time to broaden her horizons. With aspirations of becoming the Kiwi version of Carrie Bradshaw, she was driven by a desire to explore the world beyond her home country. Her partner, equally eager to travel, shared a vision that included destinations like the crystal-clear waters of Greece, the stunning castles of Scotland, and the enchanting hot air balloon rides in Cappadocia. Their plans were a blend of adventure and romantic exploration, firmly aligning their goals.
Experiences in the Big City
Rohan’s initial experiences in London have been a whirlwind of culinary highs and lows. She recalls her disappointment with burnt flat whites, a staple of New Zealand café culture. Such moments serve as a reminder of the comforts of home, even as she embraces the new flavors and dining experiences that London has to offer.
Navigating the city also comes with its peculiarities. The phenomenon of brunch prices reaching as high as $101 may leave many Kiwis in disbelief, yet it reflects the city’s diverse dining scene. Rohan’s observations point to a cultural adjustment that many expatriates face as they adapt to local customs and expectations.
Beyond the culinary landscape, Rohan encounters the city’s renowned wildlife, including the surprisingly vocal foxes. Their night-time calls have become a part of her London experience, illustrating the unpredictable charm of urban life.
Finding a New Home
As she settles into her new environment, Rohan grapples with the challenges of making London feel like home. The fast-paced lifestyle, coupled with the city’s vastness, can be overwhelming. Nonetheless, she finds solace in connecting with fellow Kiwis and discovering the rich tapestry of cultures that London offers.
Through her column, Rohan aims to provide insights into the life of a Kiwi living abroad, capturing both the excitement and the reality of expatriate life. She encourages readers to embrace their own adventures, regardless of the obstacles they may encounter.
In sharing her journey, Rohan hopes to inspire others to explore their own dreams and discover what lies beyond their familiar surroundings. As she continues her monthly reflections, readers can expect a mix of humor, heartfelt anecdotes, and a dose of reality that comes with living in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
