Nasser Al Attiyah Dominates Stage 6 of Dakar Rally, Takes Overall Lead
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Qatari driver Nasser Al Attiyah achieved a significant milestone in the 48th edition of the Dakar Rally, securing his first stage victory by winning Stage 6. This triumph propelled him into the lead of the provisional overall standings.
Driving for the Dacia team, Al Attiyah, alongside his Belgian co-driver Fabien Lorquen, completed the grueling sixth stage. The stage covered a total distance of 915 kilometers, including a challenging 326-kilometer special section, which they finished in a remarkable time of 3 hours, 38 minutes, and 28 seconds.
Competitive Finish and Standings
Al Attiyah’s victory came with a substantial margin, finishing 2 minutes and 58 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Sébastien Loeb, a nine-time World Rally Champion from France, who navigated the course with co-driver Edouard Boulanger. Loeb crossed the finish line in 3 hours, 41 minutes, and 26 seconds, securing second place. American driver Seth Quintero, along with co-driver Andrew Short, took third, finishing with a time of 3 hours, 41 minutes, and 47 seconds, which placed him 3 minutes and 19 seconds behind Al Attiyah.
Following this stage win, Al Attiyah leads the overall standings with a total time of 24 hours, 18 minutes, and 29 seconds. He holds a commanding lead of 6 minutes and 10 seconds over Henk Lategan from Toyota Racing and is 9 minutes and 13 seconds ahead of Nani Roma of Ford Racing.
Loeb’s performance boosted him from eighth to sixth place in the overall standings, although he remains 17 minutes and 36 seconds behind the leader, Al Attiyah.
Strategic Driving and Future Goals
In a post-race interview, Al Attiyah expressed his excitement about winning Stage 6, stating that he gave his all to secure first place. His high-pressure driving style played a crucial role in his performance. He noted the importance of maintaining this aggressive strategy in the upcoming stages of the rally.
Reflecting on the challenges faced during the stage, Al Attiyah admitted that the start was not easy. He emphasized his determination to navigate without issues, particularly after experiencing multiple punctures over the previous three days. His ability to overcome these obstacles is a testament to his skill and resilience.
Al Attiyah’s history in the Dakar Rally is notable; he first claimed victory in 2011 with Volkswagen and later won again in 2015 with Mini. He also secured victories with Toyota in 2019, 2022, and 2023, solidifying his status as one of the rally’s most successful drivers.
As the Dakar Rally continues, Al Attiyah’s performance will be closely watched as he aims to maintain his lead and potentially secure another championship title.
