New $66.6 Million Mental Health Ward Opens at Palmerston North Hospital
The new mental health ward at Palmerston North Hospital, named Ngā Wai Ngāro, was officially opened on October 5, 2023, with an investment of $66.6 million. Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey inaugurated the facility, emphasizing a transformative approach to supporting individuals experiencing mental distress. The ward is designed to provide a safe and supportive environment, significantly improving upon the previous Ward 21, which faced criticism following the tragic deaths of two young patients, Shaun Gray and Erica Hume, in 2014.
In his opening remarks, Doocey highlighted that the new unit represents a fundamental shift in mental health care. He noted that the facility is equipped with 28 patient bedrooms, therapy rooms, a gym, and outdoor areas, all infused with natural light to foster a therapeutic atmosphere conducive to recovery. “People go into mental health facilities to get well and be safe, which is exactly what this new facility is designed to do,” he stated.
A Commitment to Better Care
The design process for Ngā Wai Ngāro involved extensive consultation with individuals who have experienced mental health challenges, frontline staff, and community members. Doocey acknowledged the importance of these perspectives, stating, “I acknowledge that today’s opening has been long awaited by many. It is an understatement to say this facility is a major step up from Ward 21, and I am confident it will deliver better mental health care for the region.”
The new ward aims to create an environment that promotes healing and well-being. Features include dedicated family spaces and areas designed for various therapeutic activities, fostering a sense of community and support among patients and their families.
The first patients are expected to be welcomed into the new ward later this year. A transition plan is in place to ensure continuity of care, allowing for a seamless shift from Ward 21 before its formal closure.
The establishment of this facility marks a significant advancement in the mental health sector for Palmerston North, reflecting a growing recognition of the need for comprehensive mental health services that prioritize patient safety and recovery.
