A new case of measles has been confirmed, linked to a student from Wellington College who recently traveled through both Wellington Airport and Auckland Airport. This incident raises the total number of reported measles cases in New Zealand to 19, although 18 of those individuals are no longer infectious.

According to Dr. Susan Jack, the national clinical director at Health NZ, contact tracing efforts are currently underway. She stated, “This latest case is connected to Wellington College and went on to travel internationally to Asia, where they remain.” The individual had been in contact with a previous measles case and adhered to public health guidelines by quarantining for 14 days and monitoring for symptoms for an additional seven days, totaling 21 days.

Health Authorities Respond

Health officials are urging anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the affected airports during the student’s travel dates to remain vigilant for symptoms associated with measles. Symptoms typically include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and a distinctive rash. The health sector continues to emphasize the importance of vaccinations, as measles is highly contagious.

Dr. Jack reassured the public of ongoing efforts to control the situation. “We are committed to ensuring that all necessary measures are taken to protect the community,” she said. As part of these efforts, health authorities are working closely with local schools and community organizations to spread awareness about the importance of immunization and the risks associated with measles.

As the situation develops, the public is encouraged to stay informed through official health channels. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by infectious diseases, especially in a globalized world where travel can rapidly spread illnesses across borders.

In light of this case, Health NZ continues to monitor the situation closely, and further updates will be provided as necessary.
