New Medical Centre Promises Enhanced Care for Masterton Community

A new state-of-the-art medical centre is under construction in Masterton, with plans to reshape healthcare delivery in the area. The facility is set to be completed by late 2024, following the rapid progress made by contractors who have already erected the timber frame for the administration block in just over three weeks. This centre will occupy the site of the former Masterton Hospital, marking a significant step forward for local healthcare.

The project is a result of a partnership between the local iwi, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tāmakinui-a-Rua, and the Masterton Medical Centre, which has been operating from temporary premises since a fire in 2014. According to Raymond Hall, chief executive of Ngāti Kahungunu, this development is merely the first phase of a larger vision.

Vision for Comprehensive Healthcare

“We see this as being a campus, so very much stage one of our build,” Hall stated. He emphasized the need for careful consideration of future designs, aiming for a facility that encompasses not only primary healthcare but also community wraparound services. Hall believes this initiative offers a unique opportunity to create a central hub for health services.

The new medical centre is expected to strengthen primary health care in Masterton, improve access, and address existing health inequities. “Having appropriate, culturally-based healthcare services is incredibly important for our people,” Hall noted. He stressed the importance of ensuring that community members can access services they find comfortable and trustworthy.

Bob Francis, chair of the Masterton Medical Centre board, highlighted the extensive groundwork laid to develop a sustainable model of care prior to the approval of the new facility’s plans. Under the leadership of general manager Robyn Wilson, the staff focused on optimizing accessibility and patient experience within the centre.

Rapid Construction Progress

Francis praised the construction team for their swift progress, stating, “The speed of it’s been amazing, really.” He credited the support of key contributors, including David Borman, for facilitating the advancement of the project.

According to Russell Hall, lead contractor from Concept Construction, the project’s quick progression can be attributed to a straightforward design and a committed team. As the site preparation nears completion, he anticipates a significant increase in activity, particularly with plans to pour concrete for the main public area soon.

This year has been notably busy for Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, which has also secured various commercial deals, including land in Carterton and school sites in Masterton. The iwi aims to generate positive economic outcomes while ensuring social and cultural benefits for local families.
