Off-Duty Lifeguards Rescue Swimmer in Critical Condition at Piha Beach

Two off-duty volunteer lifeguards successfully rescued a swimmer in serious condition at Piha Beach on the evening of March 15, 2024. The incident unfolded when the lifeguards, members of the Piha Surf Life Saving Club, were alerted to a distressed individual in the water.

Paul Newnham and Harry Chick, who were enjoying their time at the beach, quickly responded to the emergency call. Friends of the swimmer had already brought the person to shore, where it was determined that they were experiencing hypothermia and difficulty breathing. The lifeguards took immediate action, alerting emergency services and assisting in transporting the individual to the Piha Surf Life Saving Club’s newly renovated First Aid Room.

Emergency services were notified of the incident at 19:42. The Hato Hone St John ambulance service responded with one ambulance, a first response unit, and a helicopter to ensure swift medical attention for the swimmer.

The Piha Surf Life Saving Club commended the quick thinking and actions of Newnham and Chick, stating that their intervention was crucial in a potentially life-threatening situation.
