Qatar Advances in U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers with Win Over India
Qatar achieved a vital victory in the AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers, defeating India 2-1 in their Group H match on March 15, 2024, at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha. This win marks Qatar’s second consecutive victory in the qualifiers, following a dominant 13-0 win over Brunei just days earlier.
Hashmi Al Hussain opened the scoring for Qatar in the 18th minute, heading the ball past Indian goalkeeper Sahil Poonia. Although India responded strongly after halftime, equalizing in the 52nd minute through Muhammad Suhail, Qatar ultimately secured the win with a penalty converted by Jassem Al Sharshani in the 65th minute.
Dominance in Group H
The victory propelled the Qatari team to the top of Group H with six points and an impressive goal differential of +14. India and Bahrain currently sit in second and third places, each with three points. With the top team and four best runners-up advancing to the finals in Saudi Arabia, Qatar is in an advantageous position, though their qualification remains unconfirmed mathematically.
India began the match with an energetic approach, putting pressure on the Qatari defense with quick passing sequences. Despite their strong start, it was Qatar that capitalized first, as Al Hussain’s aerial prowess gave them the lead early on.
After the break, India emerged with renewed vigor, equalizing through Suhail, who deftly directed a header into the net following a cross from Mohammed Sanan. The visitors’ momentum, however, was short-lived. Just 13 minutes later, Pramveer Singh received a second yellow card for a foul on Noureldin Ibrahim inside the penalty area, leaving India with ten men.
Final Matchup Ahead
Qatar took full advantage of the numerical superiority, with Al Sharshani confidently converting the penalty to restore their lead. This marked his second goal in as many matches in the qualifiers. Following the goal, Qatar tactically managed the game, maintaining their perfect record as they prepare for their final qualifier against Bahrain on March 19, 2024, who themselves secured a 10-0 victory over Brunei in another Group H encounter.
As Qatar aims for a spot in the U23 Asian Cup, their performance against India demonstrates their potential and resilience on the field. With only one match remaining in the group stage, all eyes will be on their upcoming challenge.
