Qatar International Baja Kicks Off at Iconic Landmark Tonight
The Qatar International Baja is set to officially commence this evening from the renowned ‘Way to the World Cup’ landmark on the Doha Corniche at 18:20. This event marks a significant moment for motorsport enthusiasts, featuring competitors from the FIA World and Middle East Baja Cups, as well as the FIM Bajas World Cup.
In preparation for the race, participants will engage in a Prologue stage today to establish the starting order for tomorrow’s opening desert selective section. The excitement is palpable as several top drivers and riders gathered for a pre-event press conference at the Lusail International Circuit. Among those present was Amro Al-Hamad, Executive Director of the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF).
Top Competitors Ready for Action
Juan Cruz Yacopini, who leads the FIA World Cup Baja standings, returns to Qatar in a Toyota Hilux, aiming to protect his 22-point advantage in the Drivers’ Championship. “I am super happy to be here in Qatar. The strategy is to make a good race,” Yacopini stated. He acknowledged the challenges of navigation, which could be pivotal in this Baja event.
Dania Akeel is also in contention, focusing on the FIA Middle East Baja Cup title against local competitor Khalifa Saleh Al-Attiyah. “This race I will try to make up the gap,” Akeel expressed, highlighting the technical aspects of the Qatar course and the challenge posed by Al-Attiyah’s local expertise.
Former FIA Middle East rally champion Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari, who won the last stage of the event in 2024, will also compete, representing the QMMF Team in a Taurus T3 Max. He emphasized the importance of speed and enjoyment for this home rally, aiming for victory amidst strong competition.
Defending Champions and Future Contenders
Mohammed Al-Balooshi, who won the motorcycle category in both 2021 and 2024, will strive to maintain his lead in the overall FIM 450cc riders’ championship. “It is important to secure the lead and then go to the last round in Dubai to, hopefully, win it for the fourth time,” he remarked, acknowledging the unique difficulties presented by the Qatari terrain.
The Prologue for motorcycles and quads is scheduled to begin at 12:25 today, followed by cars at 13:45. The ceremonial start will commence at the iconic landmark, with motorcycles taking the stage in reverse seeding order from 18:20.
As excitement builds, competitors are eager to showcase their skills on the challenging course. The 2025 Qatar International Baja promises to be a thrilling event, with a strong lineup of participants ready to make their mark.
