Qatar’s Chess Team Competes in Inaugural Fujairah Championship

Doha, Qatar: The Qatari national chess team is competing in the inaugural Fujairah World Chess Championship, which is currently taking place in Abu Dhabi and will run until September 2, 2023. The tournament has attracted nearly 600 players from 75 countries, showcasing a wide range of talent across three main categories.
Categories and Prize Pool
The championship features a variety of competitive categories. The Superstar category is reserved for players rated 2560 and above, featuring 44 elite international competitors. The Masters Championship includes around 330 players rated above 2200, while the Open Championship accommodates players rated below 2200. A total prize pool of $125,000 will be awarded to the top performers across these categories.
Representing Qatar in this prestigious event are notable players including Grandmaster Hussein Aziz, along with Khaled Al-Jumaat, Hamad Al-Kuwari, Turki Al-Kuwari, Fahad Al-Mansouri, Ibrahim Al-Janahi, Saif Ahmed, Layan Al-Qassabi, and Rawda Al-Qassabi. Each member of the team has demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in their preparation for this tournament.
International Presence and Live Streaming
In addition, Qatari international referee Sarah Al Mohannadi is participating in the International Fair Play Arbitration Course, which is being held alongside the tournament from August 28–31.
Mohammed Al Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Association, expressed optimism regarding the team’s performance. He noted the high caliber of the participants, many of whom are ranked within the world’s top 100. Al Mudahka praised the team’s preparation and emphasized the strong international presence and competitive nature of the event.
He also commended the Fujairah Chess Club for its excellent organization of the championship. Matches are being streamed live on the FIDE website and other major platforms, allowing chess enthusiasts worldwide to follow the action. Al Mudahka extended his gratitude to Dr. Abdullah Al Barakat, Chairman of the Fujairah Chess Club, for successfully hosting this significant event.
The Fujairah World Chess Championship serves not only as a platform for competition but also as an opportunity for players from diverse backgrounds to showcase their talents and foster international camaraderie through the game of chess.
