Ransomware Attack Exposes Data of 86,000 Northland Patients
A significant data breach involving the patient portal ManageMyHealth has affected approximately 86,000 patients in Northland, New Zealand. This incident, attributed to the ransomware group Kazu, has raised concerns about the security of personal health information. The attackers demanded a ransom of US$60,000 (around $105,000) following the theft of hundreds of thousands of medical files from the platform.
According to Health NZ, over 70% of the individuals impacted by this breach are based in Northland. As of now, ManageMyHealth has informed nearly half of the 120,000 patients whose data was compromised. The breach primarily involves the “My Health Documents” module, affecting only 6-7% of its total 1.8 million registered users.
This incident highlights persistent vulnerabilities within digital health platforms, particularly as reliance on online services for medical records continues to grow. While ManageMyHealth has made efforts to communicate with those affected, the potential long-term consequences of this breach remain uncertain.
Health authorities are urging affected patients to monitor their medical records closely and report any suspicious activity. The incident underscores the importance of implementing robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive personal information in an increasingly digital landscape.
As investigations continue, ManageMyHealth has committed to working with cybersecurity experts to enhance their systems and prevent future breaches. The organization has also stated that they will keep patients informed of any developments as they arise.
