Runners Embrace Community Spirit as Popularity Soars in Auckland
Running is experiencing a significant surge in popularity, as evidenced by the record number of participants in this year’s Auckland Marathon. The event recorded its highest registration for the 42.2 km distance since 2014, highlighting a growing trend among both beginners and seasoned athletes.
Among those embracing the marathon distance is Camille French (née Buscomb), a former track athlete who has transitioned to long-distance running. After representing New Zealand in the 5000m and 10,000m events at the Tokyo Olympics, French began her marathon journey in 2022 following the birth of her daughter. She is set to compete in the marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, marking a significant milestone in her athletic career.
Community and Growth in Running
French reflects on the evolution of running as a sport, noting that when she started, it lacked the widespread appeal it enjoys today. “Running wasn’t considered at all cool when I began,” she shares, “but I have always valued the sense of community among runners.” This community spirit has become a defining aspect of the sport, fostering connections among individuals who share a common passion.
The Auckland Marathon is not just a testament to the sport’s popularity but also a reflection of the increasing number of people taking up running for fitness and competition. The event has become a beacon for both experienced runners and newcomers eager to take on the challenge of long-distance running.
Preparing for Success
For those interested in joining the ranks of marathon runners, selecting the right pair of sneakers is crucial. A well-fitted shoe can significantly enhance performance and reduce the risk of injury. Beginners should focus on finding footwear that provides adequate support and cushioning, allowing them to comfortably navigate their training sessions.
In addition to comfort, runners should consider their specific running style. Various types of shoes cater to different foot shapes and running gaits, making it essential to seek advice from professionals at specialized running stores. Obtaining a proper fitting can make all the difference in training outcomes.
As running continues to gain traction globally, events like the Auckland Marathon will likely see even more participants. With athletes like Camille French leading the charge, the sport is poised not only to grow in numbers but also in community engagement, showcasing the enduring appeal of running as a lifestyle choice and competitive pursuit.
