Sheikh Hassan Returns to Powerboat Racing with Steve Curtis

Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani has made a significant return to international powerboat racing after an eleven-year hiatus. The former Qatari offshore racer, known for his competitive spirit, will partner with British throttleman Steve Curtis MBE at the 44th Annual Offshore World Championship in Key West, Florida, scheduled from November 2 to 9, 2023.

Sheikh Hassan was a prominent figure in the UIM Class One World Powerboat Championship and the American racing scene until he stepped back from competition in 2014. Curtis, who has continued to race at the highest levels, will reunite with Sheikh Hassan to compete under the legendary Spirit of Qatar 96 name, which will be revived with a new boat in the Extreme class.

Racing Aspirations and Preparations

With support from Qatar’s Ministry of Sport and Youth, the duo is eager to make a mark at the championship. “Our last race together was in 2014, but we will be testing during the third week of October before heading to Key West,” Sheikh Hassan stated enthusiastically. “The goal, of course, will be the podium and to set plans in motion for the 2026 season.” He expressed confidence that both he and Curtis would quickly adapt to the new boat.

In their previous collaboration with the Spirit of Qatar Team, the pair achieved remarkable feats, including setting a water speed record of 244 mph during the 26th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in 2014. Their history of success adds to the anticipation surrounding their return to the racing circuit.

Key West Racing Festival Schedule

The Key West racing festival will consist of three races, starting with a parade through the streets of Key West on November 2. Following this, technical checks and registration are set for November 3, with official testing occurring on November 4. The first of the Extreme races for the Truman Waterfront Cup will take place on November 5, featuring exciting on-water fireworks.

Further testing will be allowed on November 6, leading up to the second race for the Southernmost Continental Championship on November 7. Spectator-friendly events are scheduled at Truman Waterfront Park on November 8, culminating in the final race for the Conch Republic Championship on November 9.
