Health authorities are witnessing a significant increase in demand for the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine as concerns about potential outbreaks grow. The New Zealand drug-funding agency, Pharmac, has confirmed that it possesses sufficient stock to meet this rising demand.

Pharmac’s pharmaceutical funding manager, Claire Pouwels, stated that the agency maintains a “significant safety buffer” of 100,000 doses. She noted that additional shipments are scheduled to arrive later this month and in December. As of October 27, 2023, there are 113,000 doses available, which includes this emergency buffer.

“On average, around 15,000 doses are used each month. During the outbreak in 2019, total usage reached 88,130 doses over two months,” Pouwels explained. “Based on these figures, we are confident that current stock levels would cover expected usage in an outbreak.”

Increased Orders Across Major Cities

The demand for the MMR vaccine has surged particularly in Wellington, where hundreds of individuals are identified as close contacts to confirmed cases. Reports indicate similar increases in vaccine orders from major cities including Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Whangārei.

Pharmac has assured the public that it is actively monitoring vaccine usage and is prepared to procure additional stock quickly if necessary. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the risk of outbreaks and ensure public health safety.

Pouwels emphasized the agency’s commitment to public health, stating, “We are closely watching the trends in vaccine demand to ensure that we can respond effectively.” With the current safety buffer and upcoming shipments, Pharmac aims to alleviate any concerns regarding vaccine availability during this period of heightened demand.

The increase in interest in the MMR vaccine underscores the importance of vaccination in preventing disease outbreaks, a reminder of the critical role immunization plays in public health.
