Teen Dad Shares Journey of Unexpected Fatherhood in New Docuseries

A new documentary series titled Dadolescence shines a light on the lives of teenage fathers in New Zealand, featuring the story of Devalin, who discovered he was going to be a parent at just 16 years old. This intimate show, available on TVNZ+, follows Devalin and four other young dads as they navigate the challenges and joys of unexpected fatherhood.
Devalin’s journey began when his girlfriend, Keirah, took a pregnancy test in the school nurse’s office. The couple, both still in their teenage years, faced a whirlwind of emotions upon learning the news. “I was freaking. I cried, to be honest,” Devalin reflects in the documentary’s first episode.
At the time, the couple had just moved in with Devalin’s whangai parents in Palmerston North. They decided to keep the news to themselves for several months, initially confiding in their biological parents before sharing it with others. The decision to wait highlighted the challenges they faced as young parents navigating their new circumstances.
Devalin describes his feelings at that time as “mixed emotions.” The reality of impending fatherhood at such a young age can be overwhelming. “I was scared, but I was also excited,” he notes, emphasizing the dual nature of his experience. Throughout the series, viewers will witness how Devalin and his fellow participants cope with the responsibilities of parenthood while still trying to maintain their youth.
The docuseries aims to provide insight into the lives of these young fathers, showcasing not only the struggles but also the moments of joy that accompany raising a child. Dadolescence serves as a platform to discuss the social stigmas surrounding teenage parenthood and the importance of support systems for young families.
As the series unfolds, it will draw attention to the unique challenges faced by these fathers, including financial pressures, emotional turmoil, and the need for community support. Devalin’s story is just one among many that reflect the complexities of growing up while also taking on the role of a parent.
By sharing their experiences, Devalin and the other participants hope to inspire other young parents and encourage open conversations about teenage fatherhood. The series not only highlights their personal journeys but also serves as a reminder that support and understanding can make a significant difference for young families navigating this challenging path.
Dadolescence is available for streaming on TVNZ+, offering a glimpse into the realities of teenage fatherhood in Aotearoa and the journey of young men stepping into the role of parenthood.
