Bell Secures Victory in Gore, Promises Economic Growth
In the recent local elections, Mr. Bell achieved a significant victory over his opponent, Nicky Davis, garnering 2,917 votes compared to Davis’ 1,270 votes. Following the election results, Mr. Bell expressed his excitement, stating that the community’s support indicated a shared momentum towards progress.
Community Confidence and Challenges Ahead
Mr. Bell remarked, “Three years ago, people voted for change and now they’ve made a clear indication they are liking the momentum and heading in the same direction. I’m chuffed.” His initial term as the youngest mayor in New Zealand was marked by controversy, including his narrow victory over long-serving mayor Tracy Hicks by just eight votes and a public dispute with former chief executive Stephen Parry that attracted national attention.
Despite these challenges, Mr. Bell believes he has regained the community’s confidence. “I’m going to lead the best I can in return,” he stated. Yet, he acknowledged that pressing issues such as local water schemes, potential amalgamation, and changes to the Resource Management Act would require substantial attention from the council.
Focus on Economic Development
Mr. Bell’s campaign heavily emphasized economic growth, a goal he is determined to pursue during his new term. He highlighted the importance of making the council “really easy to work with” to attract investment. “Using the connections I’ve already built within government and industry, we just have to show them Gore is ripe for industry and growth,” he explained.
In his remarks, Mr. Bell also expressed gratitude towards Mrs. Davis for her efforts during the campaign. He noted that her dedication, despite the outcome, is vital for a functioning democracy. “She put a lot of time into her campaign, which is what makes an active democracy,” he said.
The recent election results signal a clear mandate for Mr. Bell as he embarks on a second term, with a focus on fostering economic development and addressing the pressing issues facing the community. As he steps back into leadership, the expectations of Gore’s residents remain high.
