Celebrated Cartoonist Garrick Tremain Passes Away at 84
Garrick Tremain, a distinguished political cartoonist and former landscape painter from New Zealand, has passed away at the age of 84. His death occurred on October 7, 2023, at the Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown after battling angiosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Tremain’s career spanned over three decades, during which he became known for his incisive commentary on political and cultural issues.
Born in 1941, Tremain transitioned to political cartooning in 1988 after an accomplished career as a painter. He quickly made a name for himself, producing daily cartoons for major publications such as the Otago Daily Times and The Press. His work resonated with audiences for its sharp wit and ability to address sensitive topics, often prompting both praise and criticism.
Legacy of Controversy and Insight
Tremain’s cartoons were not without controversy. In 2019, a cartoon related to the measles epidemic in Samoa faced backlash for its tone and timing, leading to an apology from the Otago Daily Times and a review of Tremain’s position at the paper. While he also issued an apology, he criticized the newspaper’s response, viewing it as a concession to political correctness. Despite the challenges, Tremain continued to create independently, sharing his work via email at no cost to his fans.
In October 2023, as he approached the end of his life, Tremain released his autobiography, reflecting on his time as a cartoonist and the experiences that shaped his worldview. He expressed gratitude for the life he led, stating, “I’ve had a bloody fantastic life. I wish I wasn’t dying, but I’m still feeling good and full of energy.” His optimism and passion for life remained evident even in his final days.
Tributes from Colleagues and Fans
Following his passing, the Taxpayers’ Union, an organization Tremain supported, paid tribute to him, highlighting his ability to cut through political spin with intelligence and clarity. Executive Director Jordan Williams remarked, “For decades, Garrick’s work cut through political spin with intelligence, clarity, and unmistakable wit. His cartoons were never merely humorous; they were incisive, challenging, and often uncomfortable for those in power.”
Political commentator Frank Newman described Tremain as “a truly outstanding individual,” praising him not only for his talent but also for his wit, insight, and compassion. His ability to engage with the public and provoke thought through his art solidified his status as one of New Zealand’s most influential political cartoonists.
Garrick Tremain’s contributions to political commentary and his unique artistic voice will be remembered for years to come. His legacy serves as a reminder of the power of art to challenge, provoke, and entertain.
