CK Stead Celebrates 93rd Birthday with Poem for Ann Thwaite
Celebrated New Zealand poet CK Stead marked his 93rd birthday on October 17, 2023, with the release of a poignant poem dedicated to his contemporary, Ann Thwaite. Thwaite, who turned 93 just days earlier on October 4, is remembered not only for her literary contributions but also for her connection to the late poet Anthony Thwaite, who passed away in 2021.
A Tribute to a Literary Legacy
Stead’s poem, titled “Reading Anthony For Ann,” reflects on both the intimacy of poetry and the enduring bonds formed through literature. The work captures the essence of a shared literary journey, inviting readers to engage with its wit and precision. Stead describes the poem as a personal gift to Thwaite, who is recognized for her biographical works on notable figures such as A.A. Milne and Frances Hodgson Burnett. Currently, she is revising her biography of Emily Tennyson for a new edition in the United States.
The poem serves as a tribute not only to Thwaite but also to her late husband, Anthony Thwaite. A prominent editor for respected publications including the BBC, The Listener, and The New Statesman, Anthony Thwaite made significant contributions to the literary world. He was also the literary executor of the renowned poet Philip Larkin.
Reflecting on a Shared Experience
In his commentary on the poem, Stead notes, “This was my birthday present to my exact contemporary, Ann Thwaite.” His words highlight the special connection they share, as both authors have navigated the complexities of their literary careers while celebrating their lives and friendships. The poem’s gentle rhymes and thoughtful narrative evoke a sense of gratitude, reminding readers of the power of poetry to forge connections across time and circumstance.
Stead’s work continues to resonate within the literary community, showcasing not only his remarkable talent but also the significance of personal relationships within the sphere of literature. As he celebrates this milestone, Stead’s dedication to Thwaite serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of shared experiences and the enduring power of words.
As CK Stead continues to inspire through his writing, the literary world reflects on the legacy of both him and Anthony Thwaite, whose contributions have enriched the lives of many. The release of this poem on such a significant occasion adds another layer to their intertwined narratives, celebrating not only the past but also the ongoing journey of creativity and connection.
