Community Champion Laurie Slee Shares Insights on Local Engagement

Laurie Slee, a prominent figure in community development, reflects on his journey from London to east Auckland, where he has dedicated much of his life to enhancing local environments and advocating for residents’ rights. His commitment is particularly evident in his involvement with the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association and the Friends of Mangemangeroa.
Born in Acton, London, during World War II, Slee’s early career began with the P&O Group, where he focused on productivity improvements. He later pursued a professional qualification in transport and an honours degree in economics. His career culminated in a major restructuring initiative that established numerous companies within the P&O Group. In search of new challenges, he made the life-changing decision to relocate to New Zealand in 1972.
Determined to explore the world, Slee initially traveled through the Caribbean and North America before arriving in New Zealand with minimal funds but a wealth of experiences. Captivated by the country’s beauty and egalitarian spirit, he settled in east Auckland, where he contributed to the NZ Government Railways by redesigning and implementing a personnel system that significantly enhanced productivity.
After his tenure with the government, Slee transitioned to the private sector, focusing on performance management for over 25 years. His consulting work spanned approximately 30 countries, assisting governments in developing policies and public sector reform strategies.
Community Engagement and Local Advocacy
Slee’s commitment to community service intensified after he retired from paid employment. He became actively involved in local initiatives, including his attendance at Eastview Baptist Church and his leadership role in the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association. His focus on ensuring value for money from local government expenditures has led to significant involvement in local planning issues.
One significant concern Slee has tackled is the proposed construction of 70 apartments on Sandspit Road, an area initially zoned for just nine houses. After several unsuccessful applications, including a recent High Court appeal, the development remains a contentious issue. Another ongoing challenge involves a subdivision proposal on Pah Road that could threaten the roots of two kauri trees, which has also faced opposition.
Beyond advocacy, Slee underscores the importance of community involvement in preserving local values. He believes residents need representatives who can effectively voice their concerns, particularly in cases where developments threaten the character of the area.
Commitment to Environmental Restoration
Slee’s dedication extends to environmental initiatives, particularly through his involvement with the Friends of Mangemangeroa. He joined the group to contribute to the maintenance and preservation of the Mangemangeroa Reserves, which offer vital recreational space for the community. He highlights the efforts of volunteers, particularly the leadership of Betty Harris and others, who have worked tirelessly for over 30 years to protect and restore the area.
The group recently engaged with local council staff to discuss revitalizing long-term visions for the reserves. They emphasized the need for plans that adapt to climate change and ensure that the reserves remain accessible to future generations. Slee acknowledges the hard work of volunteers who nurture seedlings raised from local flora, highlighting that many of the 120,000 seedlings planted in the area are cultivated through community efforts.
Reflecting on societal values, Slee expresses concern about a growing focus on profit over people within New Zealand. He advocates for a balanced approach, where those in need receive support through government initiatives rather than relying solely on the private sector. He suggests a shift in priorities, encouraging a focus on community well-being, health, education, and housing.
Through his extensive community involvement, Laurie Slee exemplifies the spirit of civic engagement. His efforts to enhance local environments and advocate for residents reflect a deep commitment to ensuring that east Auckland remains a vibrant, equitable, and sustainable community for all.
