Community Honors Mike McLeod with Fireworks Display Tribute
A sky-high celebration is set to honor the life of Mike McLeod, a cherished community figure in Marfell, on November 8. The inaugural Mike McLeod Memorial Marfell Fireworks Display will pay tribute to the man known for his immense heart and unwavering commitment to uplifting those around him.
McLeod’s legacy is defined by his deep connection to the community, characterized by the Maori principles of kotahitanga (unity) and aroha (love). His contributions included pivotal initiatives such as the Koha Christmas, which provided food and gifts to families in need. According to Justin King, who worked closely with McLeod, he was a “massive part” of this initiative, making challenges seem manageable and spreading positivity through his energy.
King recalled how the Koha Christmas program became overwhelming over the years, leading McLeod to offer his support. “Nothing was hard for him, he’d just make everything easy,” King said. McLeod would mobilize his “pack of soldiers” to assist with deliveries, ensuring that local children had a memorable Christmas. “If it wasn’t for us showing up, there’s no way those tamariki would have had a Christmas,” he added.
The impact of McLeod’s passing is still felt deeply within his family. His wife, Michelle Robb, expressed that the upcoming memorial event is “huge” for honoring his passion for the youth in their community. Similarly, McLeod’s niece, Renee-Jewelz Bunyan, described her uncle’s enthusiasm for helping others as “contagious,” indicating his ongoing presence in the lives he touched.
K-Lee Torrey, another family member, emphasized McLeod’s ability to make everyone feel like family, stating, “He had the biggest heart.” The fireworks display, sponsored by King’s company, Cracker Shack Fireworks, is designed to be a free community event and aims to become an annual tradition. King has previously organized fireworks displays for the New Plymouth and Waitara communities, showcasing his commitment to bringing people together.
Funds raised through King’s pop-up fireworks stores around Taranaki, which operated from November 2-5, will be reinvested into local initiatives, including the Empowering Tamariki Programme. This program, led by Shane and Tessa Wallacehoskin, focuses on combating bullying and helping children manage their emotions.
The community fireworks display will take place at Marfell Park and is scheduled to start at 21:15. Romain Thomson, a family member, highlighted that this gathering aligns with McLeod’s strong belief in unity, stating, “Hopefully his legacy can live on through that.” As the community prepares for this heartfelt tribute, McLeod’s spirit of kindness and generosity continues to inspire those who knew him.
