David Bussau: Entrepreneurial Pioneer in Microfinance and Aid

David Bussau, an influential figure in microfinance, has dedicated his life to breaking the cycle of poverty through innovative entrepreneurial solutions. As the founder of Opportunity International Australia, Bussau’s journey began in an Anglican boys’ home, where he first recognized the importance of resilience and resourcefulness. At the age of 15, he launched his entrepreneurial career by renting a hotdog stand, setting the stage for a lifetime of impactful ventures.
The turning point in Bussau’s career came after the devastation caused by Cyclone Tracey in 1974 and an earthquake in Bali in 1976. Witnessing the inadequacies of traditional aid responses, he realized that these efforts often failed to empower communities effectively. This led him to explore microfinance as a viable alternative, aiming to provide individuals with the tools necessary to uplift themselves.
Bussau’s commitment to microfinance was exemplified when he offered a $50 loan to Indonesian farmer Ketut Suwiria. This modest amount enabled Suwiria to establish a successful business, which not only improved his own life but also created job opportunities for others in his community. This experience profoundly inspired Bussau and motivated him to expand his efforts in poverty alleviation.
In 1979, Bussau founded the Maranatha Trust and later partnered with Al Whittaker to establish Opportunity International, a nonprofit organization committed to providing microloans and financial education to impoverished communities. Today, Opportunity International operates in over 30 countries, supporting millions of individuals in their quest for economic stability and independence.
Though Bussau has stepped back from day-to-day operations, he remains an active advisor to various organizations dedicated to social change. His contributions to the field have garnered him numerous accolades, including the Order of Australia, the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, and recognition as Senior Australian of the Year.
Bussau’s efforts have not only transformed the lives of countless individuals but have also reshaped the landscape of international aid and development. His pioneering work in microfinance continues to inspire new generations of entrepreneurs and philanthropists committed to making a difference.
Through his journey, David Bussau exemplifies the profound impact that one individual can have on the world. His story serves as a reminder that innovative thinking and compassion can lead to sustainable solutions for some of society’s most pressing challenges.
