The upcoming Ready to Volunteer Day, scheduled for September 5, 2024, at the James Cumming Community Centre in Gore, offers individuals a chance to explore various volunteer opportunities. This event, organized by the Gore District Council, aims to connect community members with local organizations seeking volunteers.

Roxy van Zyl, the project lead for the Ready for Living initiative, emphasized the importance of this event in her statement. “Ready to Volunteer Day is a chance for people to connect with local organisations and find out about volunteer opportunities in our community,” she stated. This initiative is tailored to help individuals of all ages discover meaningful ways to contribute their skills and experiences.

A range of organizations will be participating, including the Eastern Southland Riding for the Disabled, Gore Hokonui Lions, Gore Cat Rescue, Southland Shafts and Wheels Club, and Hato Hone St John. Each organization will host booths and displays, providing potential volunteers with insights into various roles that cater to diverse interests and abilities.

Kelly Morrison, president of Gore Cat Rescue, expressed her enthusiasm about connecting with prospective volunteers. “Our charity purely operates on a volunteer basis, and we think this is a fantastic way for people to connect with us in a friendly environment and ask any questions they might have,” she said.

Beyond benefiting organizations, volunteering offers substantial advantages for individuals. Van Zyl highlighted that participation in volunteer activities can enhance mental and physical well-being. “Volunteering is a great way to stay mentally and physically active; it offers a sense of purpose and fulfilment, helps build new connections, and allows you to use your skills and life experience to benefit others,” she noted. She added, “You may be surprised at how important your skills and knowledge may be.”

Ready to Volunteer Day will take place from 12:00 to 14:00 and is particularly aimed at those aged 65 and over, though everyone is welcome to attend. This event presents an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking to make a positive impact in their community while engaging with like-minded people.
