East Auckland’s Bev Telfer Honoured for Community Sewing Efforts

Bev Telfer, a dedicated community volunteer from east Auckland, has been awarded the Community Hero Award for her exceptional contributions to local charitable efforts. She is recognised for her leadership of the Highland Park Sewing Group, which creates essential clothing for children in need.

Impacting Lives Through Sewing

Telfer’s commitment to her community is evident in her organisation of about 25 volunteers who meet weekly to sew clothes for Kidz First Children’s Hospital at Middlemore Hospital and for Plunket. This initiative not only provides necessary garments for vulnerable children but also fosters a sense of community among the participants.

Colleen Mary Muir, who nominated Telfer for the award, praised her “boundless energy” and unwavering dedication. Muir noted that Telfer diligently searches for affordable materials and often bakes shortbread as a gesture of gratitude for those who provide the group with good deals on supplies. “Nothing is too much bother for her. The group would find it very difficult to function without her help,” Muir stated.

Acknowledging Community Heroes

The Community Hero Award, sponsored by New World Howick, aims to shine a light on individuals who positively impact their local communities. Recipients receive a $50 gift card and are featured in the Times newspaper and on its website.

Community members are encouraged to nominate individuals who exemplify selflessness and make significant contributions. Nominations can be submitted via email, detailing the nominee’s actions and the impact they have made. High-resolution photos are also welcomed to help honour these deserving individuals.

As Telfer continues her vital work in sewing for children, her story serves as an inspiration for others to engage in community service.
