Food Rescue Initiative Transforms Lives in Southland Communities

A not-for-profit organization dedicated to reducing food waste has made significant strides in aiding families across Southland. In 2023, KiwiHarvest achieved a record distribution of rescued food, implementing a new initiative that unifies food rescue organizations and community groups nationwide. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that food donations reach local communities more quickly and efficiently.

Angela Carver, the chief executive of KiwiHarvest, emphasized the positive impact of this partnership. “By providing nutritious food, we allow community organizations to focus on their core services,” she stated. The initiative is designed not just to deliver food but to offer comprehensive support that can transform lives.

Impact on Local Families

For the Murihiku Young Parents’ Learning Centre, the benefits of KiwiHarvest’s donations extend beyond basic food relief. Centre director Kim Scott expressed her gratitude for the partnership, noting, “Our young mums have really valued getting access to fresh, nutritious food… and it’s made a real difference to their daily lives.” One single mother, for example, learned to budget effectively and encouraged her son to try healthier food options.

In 2023, KiwiHarvest reached a significant milestone by rescuing over 3 million kilograms of surplus food across New Zealand, redistributing it to those in need. The Invercargill branch has played a pivotal role, distributing 285,376 kilograms of rescued food, which translates to approximately 634,169 meals for families facing food insecurity.

Fostering Community Connections

Carver hopes that the initiative will do more than alleviate hunger; she believes it can spark important conversations about the challenges families face. “Food is a great way to unlock a door; it enables you to sit down and have a conversation and ask people what can you do to help,” she remarked.

This approach not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters a sense of community and support among those involved. By connecting local organizations with food donors, KiwiHarvest is paving the way for a more resilient and supportive network, ultimately helping families thrive in the Southland region.
