Garage Project Rescues Fortune Favours Brewery from Closure

Local brewers Garage Project have intervened to prevent the permanent closure of Fortune Favours, a bar and brewery in Wellington, which has been a fixture in the community for the past decade. The establishment faced a daunting challenge, experiencing a significant 45% drop in revenue over the last two years, despite recently earning accolades at this year’s Beervana festival.
In an interview with broadcaster Mike Hosking, Garage Project founder Pete Gillespie expressed his strong sentiments about the situation. He noted, “They did such an incredible job with that space, it would be a crime to see everything ripped out.” Gillespie’s remarks highlight the cultural and social value that Fortune Favours has contributed to the local hospitality landscape.
While acknowledging the potential challenges, Gillespie conveyed a sense of optimism regarding the future of the bar. He admitted that they might have “more optimism than they should,” but he firmly believes in the importance of investing in the space and its community. “It’s worth doubling down on the bar,” he stated, indicating a commitment to revitalising the establishment.
This rescue operation by Garage Project is a significant development in the Wellington hospitality sector, which has faced numerous hurdles over the past few years. The pandemic has had a lasting impact on local businesses, with many struggling to maintain operations amid fluctuating consumer demand and increased costs. The decision to step in and support Fortune Favours underscores the collaborative spirit within the local brewing community, aiming to preserve cherished venues that contribute to the cultural fabric of the area.
As the situation unfolds, both Garage Project and Fortune Favours will need to navigate the complexities of the current market. Their efforts may serve as a model for other struggling establishments looking for innovative solutions to survive in an increasingly challenging environment. The community’s response will likely play a crucial role in determining the future of Fortune Favours as it embarks on this new chapter.
