Graduates Celebrate Milestones in Wellington Parade
More than a thousand graduates from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington—marched through the streets of Wellington on March 15, 2024, to commemorate their academic achievements. The parade highlighted the accomplishments of students, with over half of the participants receiving postgraduate qualifications.
Among the notable recognitions during the event were the honorary doctorates awarded to prominent figures in their respective fields. Business leader Dame Theresa Gattung and legal expert Sir David Carruthers KNZM received the prestigious honors, acknowledging their significant contributions to society.
This graduation ceremony marks a milestone for the university, as it includes the first Doctor of Nursing degree conferred by the University Council. This achievement reflects the institution’s commitment to advancing education in critical areas of healthcare.
Chancellor’s Message to Graduates
In a statement during the parade, Chancellor Alan Judge emphasized the importance of the graduates’ values and relationships developed throughout their studies. “We are in a time of global change, but our graduates have developed values and relationships that will sustain them throughout their lives,” he remarked.
Judge expressed pride in the graduates, stating, “To our graduates—our future leaders and innovators, I look forward to walking alongside as you lead us into the future with integrity, perseverance, and empathy.” His words resonated with the graduates, highlighting their potential to make a positive impact in various fields.
