Grandmother Self-Publishes Children’s Book Inspired by Grandson
Jenny Mehrtens, an artist based in the Dudley’s Cottage Precinct, has taken a heartfelt idea and transformed it into a self-published children’s book titled William and Rosa Go For a Walk. Originally created as a birthday present for her grandson William’s third birthday in March 2023, the book quickly gained traction after Mehrtens shared some of its illustrations on social media.
Following an overwhelmingly positive response on her Instagram page, Mehrtens decided to pursue publication of the book. The story follows William and his best friend, Rosa, on an adventurous walk as they search for a fantail. Mehrtens noted, “I certainly don’t call myself a writer, but it was coming from the heart about what a 3-year-old might love.”
Process of Creation and Self-Publishing
The creative process was particularly special for Mehrtens, who resides in Australia while William lives in Copenhagen. She explained that the book allowed her to express her love for her grandson, especially since she does not get to see him often. “I grew up loving the feel of beautiful books — books that had fabric covers and gold leaf,” she said, emphasizing the nostalgic inspiration behind her work.
Mehrtens found the journey of self-publishing enjoyable, taking on the challenge of learning to paint with watercolours. The finished product features a fabric cover and inside pages embellished with gold leaf and multi-layered acrylic paint on oak board, showcasing her artistic style.
During her recent visit to Copenhagen, Mehrtens read the story to William multiple times. She described the experience as fulfilling, stating, “By the time I left, he was almost saying it verbatim.” The book has already proven to be a hit with her grandson.
Availability and Pricing
For those interested in acquiring a copy of William and Rosa Go For a Walk, it is available for $49. Interested buyers can visit Mehrtens’ studio or contact her via email at [email protected].
This charming tale not only reflects Mehrtens’ creativity but also highlights the deep bonds of family and the joy of sharing stories with loved ones. As she continues to explore her artistic talents, Mehrtens hopes her book resonates with children and families alike.
