Howick Historical Village Celebrates Community Hero Natasha Bates
Natasha Bates has been recognized as a Community Hero for her longstanding commitment to the Howick Historical Village in east Auckland, New Zealand. With over 21 years of volunteer work, Natasha plays a vital role in bringing history to life for visitors, particularly during the village’s Live Days.
The accolade comes from a nomination by Lexie Palmer-Gapper, the village’s general manager. She praised Natasha for her dedication and the unique experience she provides to guests. “Natasha currently runs the kitchen of the grand homestead Puhi Nui during our Live Days,” Palmer-Gapper stated. “By making her favourite heritage recipes, Natasha brings the past to life through the smells, sounds, tastes, and heat of cooking on the Victorian-era coal range.”
Natasha’s work is not just about food; it involves engaging with visitors, sharing stories about the recipes, and explaining the historical significance of the dishes. Her enthusiasm and willingness to chat with guests enhance their experience, making history tangible and relatable.
The Community Hero Award is part of an initiative to recognize individuals who make significant contributions to the local community. Sponsored by New World Howick, recipients of the award receive a $50 gift card and are featured in the local newspaper and on its website.
Individuals interested in nominating a Community Hero can do so by emailing a brief description of their contributions to [email protected]. Nominations should include specific examples of their actions and impact, along with contact details and a high-resolution photo if available.
The Howick Historical Village and the wider community are immensely grateful for Natasha’s commitment. Her efforts not only preserve the village’s rich history but also foster a sense of community and connection among visitors.
