Kaiapoi Croquet Club Celebrates New Clubhouse Opening

The Kaiapoi Croquet Club has officially opened its new clubhouse, marking a significant milestone for the organization and its members. Over 80 attendees, including club members and guests, gathered to celebrate this momentous occasion, which was led by club president Geoff Russell.

The new facility, located at 50 Courtenay Drive within the Kaiapoi Community Hub area, was previously the pavilion of the former St Paul’s Tennis Club. The pavilion was relocated 16 kilometers from behind the Papanui RSA in June and underwent extensive renovations over the past three months. Club members, alongside Mr. Russell, worked diligently to repaint the interior and exterior, build a new deck, and prepare the space for its intended use.

The project also honored the late Noel Bain, a dedicated club greenkeeper, who contributed significantly to the renovations. He ensured that the club’s two new playing lawns met competition standards before his passing. In recognition of his efforts, the club dedicated the first lawn to him, an act commemorated by his wife, Mary Bain. The second lawn was dedicated to Norma Johnson, a long-standing member who served the club for over 30 years.

The clubhouse was officially renamed the Sir Isaac Wilson Clubhouse, in tribute to the Kaiapoi businessman and politician who donated the original parcel of land for the club in 1904. Dan Gordon, the Mayor of Waimakariri, remarked on Wilson’s pivotal role in establishing organized sports in the region. He noted that the opening of the new clubhouse represents a new chapter in the club’s history, which was established in 1905.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place last Friday, featuring Dorothy Adams, the granddaughter of Sir Isaac Wilson, along with Mayor Gordon and President Russell. Following the cutting, a 120th birthday cake was shared, and Gay Jones, President of the Canterbury Croquet Association, delivered a speech highlighting the club’s rich history and the renewed interest in croquet among younger generations.

The opening of the new clubhouse not only signifies a new beginning for the Kaiapoi Croquet Club but also underscores its enduring legacy within the community. The club looks forward to welcoming both seasoned players and newcomers to enjoy the sport in their revitalized space.
