Local Art Exhibition Celebrates 130 Years of Bosshard Legacy
An art exhibition showcasing the Bosshard family’s rich legacy in jewellery and craftsmanship is now on display at the Eastern Southland Art Gallery in Gore. The exhibition, titled “Lineage: 130 Years of Bosshard Jewellery,” highlights the artistic evolution of the Bosshard family, featuring a range of works that encompass jewellery, photographs, and memorabilia.
The exhibition is set against the backdrop of the Strath Taieri, where Kobi Bosshard operates a workshop housed in a repurposed shearing shed. This creative space reflects both the history of the location and the artistic journey of the Bosshard family. Kobi describes his workshop as the best he has ever had, while his wife, Patricia Bosshard-Browne, has adapted her weaving loom into this collaborative environment.
Their journey has seen significant changes, including a previous move from Dunedin to a stone cottage near Middlemarch, where they had to store much of their extensive art collection from renowned artists such as Ralph Hotere and Philip Trusttum. Patricia, a former art dealer, formed strong ties with the local community and gallery curators, which helped pave the way for their current exhibition.
Honoring Tradition and Craftsmanship
The exhibition not only showcases their personal creations but also reflects on the heritage of jewellery-making in the Bosshard family. Kobi’s grandfather, Jakob Bosshard, opened his first shop in Uster, Switzerland, in 1895. Through his intricate drawings from art school, Kobi traces the family’s artistic lineage back to its origins. “The emphasis is not on jewellery from my point of view,” Kobi explains, emphasising the importance of tradition and respect for the craft.
As the couple walked through the Eastern Southland Art Gallery, they were met with a wave of nostalgia. The exhibition features a prominent piece by Trusttum that had not been seen in ten years, sparking a deeper connection to their past. Kobi reflects on the sense of loss experienced when they had to part with cherished works but finds solace in the opportunity to showcase their legacy.
Patricia highlights the significance of having a dedicated space for art, culture, and heritage. “It draws in people from all backgrounds,” she states, noting the potential for inspiring future generations of artists. The exhibition serves as a reminder of the couple’s commitment to nurturing creativity in the community.
Continued Passion for Art and Craft
Throughout their artistic journey, Kobi has embraced the isolation of New Zealand, allowing him to develop his work at his own pace. He believes this freedom has led to a unique style that reflects his identity and heritage. “I can confidently say that all the work I have made is my own and is of New Zealand,” he asserts.
Kobi and Patricia have collected numerous artworks over the years, often prioritising their customers’ interests. “We didn’t put a red sticker on the painting we wanted,” Kobi recalls, highlighting their dedication to the art community. Patricia, who returned to art school for weaving after retiring, continues to create pieces that adorn their home alongside works from celebrated artists.
The exhibition, which runs until November 23, 2023, offers a comprehensive view of the Bosshard family’s artistic contributions and their ongoing influence in the world of jewellery and art. Visitors to the Eastern Southland Art Gallery can experience this unique blend of heritage and creativity, making it a significant cultural event in the region.
In celebrating 130 years of Bosshard jewellery, the exhibition not only honours the craftsmanship of the past but also looks forward to the future of the arts in New Zealand. As Kobi aptly puts it, “If you do that, and you work, and if you’re successful, you may add a little bit to the tradition.”
