At the age of 79, Jones has dedicated over five decades to the Leeston Bowling Club, culminating in his current role as greenkeeper, a position he assumed three years ago. His efforts have thrust the club into the national spotlight as it prepares to host the national singles and pairs championship for the first time in 25 years, scheduled from January 2 to 9, 2024.

Dedicated Service to the Green

Jones stepped into the greenkeeper role after the previous holder fell ill, committing an average of 15 hours each week to maintain the bowling green. His responsibilities include mowing, watering, weeding, and applying treatments to ensure a top-quality playing surface. His hard work and attention to detail led to the club’s selection for the championship, confirmed by Bowls New Zealand on December 7.

“I thought I couldn’t get it any better than what it is now,” Jones remarked. “I was very happy about it. My aim was to try and get the green up to the standard for the nationals and I achieved that. The members are so excited, it just makes me so happy.” His passion for the sport and dedication to the club have not only elevated its status but also heightened the enthusiasm among its members.

Learning and Growing in the Role

Jones credits much of his knowledge to Terry Rossiter, the greenkeeper at the nearby Riccarton Racecourse. “If we didn’t have him, I don’t know what I’d have done,” Jones said, acknowledging Rossiter’s guidance in setting up mowing equipment and managing sprays. This mentorship has been crucial in ensuring the green’s maintenance meets professional standards.

The quality of the green has drawn praise from visiting players, especially during the recent Canterbury men’s fours post-section play. “One guy said to me when he was leaving, ‘we’ll try and get all the (Canterbury) stuff here because I’d sooner play here than anyone else.’ When guys leave saying that, that’s pretty good,” Jones noted, highlighting the positive feedback he has received.

Maintaining the bowling green involves rigorous attention to detail. Jones has completed the necessary certification for applying treatments, understanding the risks involved in using the wrong products. “You don’t put the wrong spray on, otherwise you end up with a dead green. You’d be popular then,” he joked, underscoring the seriousness of his responsibilities.

Daily observations are key to keeping the green in peak condition. “You know when to mow it and make sure it gets enough water. On hot days, you give it a bit more water than other days,” he explained. Regular checks allow him to identify issues such as weeds or diseases promptly, ensuring that the green remains playable throughout the season.

Jones’s commitment to the Leeston Bowling Club is evident in his meticulous care for the green, balancing the workload throughout the year to achieve optimal results come spring. “You work through the winter and come spring, the more attention you give it, the better it will be,” he concluded, reflecting on the seasonal cycle of maintenance.

As the national singles and pairs championship approaches, the efforts of Jones and the club’s members will be on full display, marking a significant milestone for the Leeston Bowling Club and the local community.
