Local Hero Vani Kapoor Unites Community Through Support Services

Vani Kapoor, a dedicated volunteer with the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Pakuranga, has been recognized for her significant contributions to the local community. Over the past ten years, Kapoor has played a vital role in supporting new migrants in New Zealand, providing essential services that foster integration and empowerment.
The CAB Pakuranga manager, Louise Boswell, nominated Kapoor for the Community Hero Award, highlighting her extensive efforts in enhancing the lives of newcomers in the region. Since 2014, under the auspices of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), various Auckland CABs received funding to assist new settlers. Kapoor took the initiative to become a paid coordinator for this program, successfully managing workshops that covered crucial topics such as employment, tax advice, business startup guidance, health services navigation, and immigration processes.
Kapoor’s commitment did not waver when the funding for the original program ceased. She proactively organized bi-monthly community network meetings that encouraged collaboration among local organizations and fostered connections within the community. Her efforts were further supported by a grant obtained from the Howick Local Board, enabling the continuation of workshops for migrants and the community meetings.
The impact of Kapoor’s work has been profound, allowing the CAB to extend its reach and be more responsive to the evolving needs of the community. These initiatives not only empower new migrants but also strengthen the fabric of the local area, making it more inclusive and supportive.
As part of her recognition, Kapoor will receive a $50 New World gift card and will be featured in local media, celebrating her dedication to the community. This acknowledgment serves to inspire others to recognize individuals who contribute selflessly to the welfare of their communities.
Those wishing to nominate a Community Hero can do so through the Times’ official website. The initiative seeks to highlight the unsung heroes who make significant impacts in their local areas, offering a platform to recognize their invaluable work.
