Mitre 10 Celebrates Five Years of Diwali Festivities Nationwide

Mitre 10 is celebrating its fifth consecutive year of Diwali festivities across New Zealand, marking the occasion with vibrant events that honour the festival’s themes of joy, unity, and belonging. What began as a local initiative in Auckland has transformed into a nationwide celebration, reflecting the expanding Indian communities and the diverse cultural landscape of Aotearoa.
Since 2021, Diwali has become an integral part of the Mitre 10 experience. The company has embraced the festival through lively in-store displays, Hindi music, and traditional sweets, while also providing cultural education for both employees and customers. This year, stores will receive festive kits that include greeting posters, floral garlands, and more, aimed at enhancing the celebratory atmosphere.
Engaging the Community
Customer-facing events such as the Easy As Kids workshops scheduled for October 19, 2023, offer families a chance to engage in rangoli-shaped diya-making activities. These workshops are designed to create a culturally rich experience that fosters community spirit and brings families together. “Diwali or Deepavali is a beautiful opportunity to celebrate our culturally diverse team and wish one another good health, prosperity, and light,” said Jules Lloyd-Jones, Chief Marketing Officer of Mitre 10.
In addition to workshops for children, Mitre 10’s Support Centre staff will host puja, a traditional Hindu prayer ceremony, and share Indian treats throughout the celebration. This initiative aims to create moments of connection and learning within the company and emphasizes the importance of cultural inclusion.
Commitment to Cultural Inclusion
At the core of Mitre 10’s Diwali celebrations is a strong commitment to cultural inclusion. “At Mitre 10, we celebrate what makes each person unique,” Lloyd-Jones stated. “Our aim is for every team member to feel proud of their own stories, backgrounds, and beliefs and to bring their whole self to work. We’re a family and we are committed to embracing cultural differences.”
These initiatives not only enhance employee morale but also reflect Mitre 10’s broader mission to create an environment where everyone can feel welcomed and valued. As New Zealand’s cultural landscape continues to evolve, Mitre 10 positions itself as a leader in fostering diversity and inclusion.
The celebrations are more than just a corporate event; they signify Mitre 10’s dedication to being a proudly locally owned Kiwi brand that embraces the full spectrum of what it means to be a New Zealander today. Through its Diwali festivities, Mitre 10 showcases the importance of community, unity, and the rich tapestry of cultures that define Aotearoa.
