Mr. Bell Secures Victory, Promises Focus on Community Growth

Mr. Bell has achieved a decisive victory in the recent local elections, garnering 2,917 votes compared to Nicky Davis, who received 1,270. Following the results, Mr. Bell expressed his enthusiasm, stating he feels the community and council are aligned and progressing positively. He remarked, “Three years ago, people voted for change, and now they’ve made a clear indication they are liking the momentum and heading in the same direction. I’m chuffed.”
In his first term, Mr. Bell, who became the youngest mayor in New Zealand’s history when he unseated former mayor Tracy Hicks by only eight votes, faced significant challenges. His tenure was marked by public disputes, particularly with then chief executive Stephen Parry, which garnered national attention. Mr. Bell characterized the controversies as predominantly internal conflicts. He believes he has regained the community’s trust and is committed to leading effectively in response to their confidence.
Looking ahead, Mr. Bell acknowledged the pressing issues that will demand attention during his new term. He highlighted the complexities surrounding water schemes, potential council amalgamation, and proposed changes to the Resource Management Act. He noted these matters would “eat up a lot of our time.”
Mr. Bell’s campaign emphasized a strong drive for economic growth. He plans to advocate for initiatives that facilitate easier collaboration with businesses, drawing on the connections he has established within government and industry sectors. “The key thing is, the council has to be really easy to work with, and we just have to show them Gore is ripe for industry and growth,” he stated.
In a show of sportsmanship, Mr. Bell extended his gratitude to Mrs. Davis, acknowledging her dedication and effort during the campaign. He remarked that her commitment to the democratic process is what makes an active democracy thrive.
As Mr. Bell embarks on this new chapter, the community will be watching closely to see how his leadership unfolds and whether he can deliver on his promises for growth and stability in Gore.
