Natasha Bates Honored as Community Hero for Culinary Contributions
Natasha Bates has been recognized as a Community Hero for her long-standing dedication and service at the Howick Historical Village. Bates, who has volunteered for over 21 years, was nominated by Lexie Palmer-Gapper, the general manager of the village, for her exceptional contributions to the community.
Bringing History to Life
During the village’s 2025 Live Day, Bates runs the kitchen at the grand homestead Puhi Nui, where she showcases her culinary skills by preparing heritage recipes. Her work not only involves cooking on a traditional Victorian-era coal range but also engaging visitors through the sensory experiences of taste and smell. Bates explains her baking methods and the historical significance behind each dish, fostering a deeper appreciation for the community’s heritage.
“Natasha brings the past to life for our visitors through the smells, sounds, tastes – and heat! – of cooking,” Palmer-Gapper stated in her nomination. “She is incredibly generous with her time and energy, creating a true living history experience.” This hands-on approach has made her an invaluable asset to the Howick and Districts Historical Society and the village.
Recognizing Community Heroes
The Community Hero Award acknowledges individuals who make significant contributions to the local community. Sponsored by New World Howick, recipients receive a $50 gift card and are featured in local media outlets. The Times encourages community members to nominate heroes who demonstrate a commitment to improving the lives of others. Nominations can be submitted online at www.times.co.nz/nominate.
Through her culinary talents and passion for history, Natasha Bates exemplifies the spirit of community service. Her efforts not only enrich the visitor experience at the Howick Historical Village but also inspire others to engage with their local heritage. The impact of her work resonates throughout the community, making her a deserving recipient of this honor.
