New Plymouth Celebrates Volunteer Contributions with Awards and Events
In a significant move to celebrate community service, Volunteering New Plymouth has announced new initiatives aimed at recognizing the invaluable contributions of volunteers in the region. Under the leadership of manager Marie Riordan, the organization is rolling out several programs, including the introduction of a new monthly award and preparations for the upcoming Volunteer Recognition Awards.
Volunteer Recognition Awards will be held on December 5, 2026, coinciding with International Volunteer’s Day. This year’s awards will celebrate the achievements of volunteers across various categories, including individuals, teams, couples, and youth. In 2025, a total of 98 volunteers were honored at the awards ceremony, reflecting a strong commitment to volunteerism within the community.
A new initiative, the Volunteer of the Month award, is set to commence this month, thanks to generous sponsorship from Westwill Properties and Kiwi Mosaic. Each month, one outstanding volunteer will receive this recognition and subsequently be nominated for the prestigious Volunteer of the Year award at the December ceremony. This annual event aims to culminate a year of appreciation and recognition for volunteers, particularly significant as 2026 has been designated as the International Volunteer Year.
In addition to individual accolades, Volunteering New Plymouth participates in broader recognition efforts, such as submitting nominations for the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year awards. Last November, nine of the 16 recognized volunteers from Taranaki were awarded medals as part of the Tower Local Heroes initiative, marking Taranaki as a region with a notable number of medallists. This year, Taranaki has a total of 16 recipients among the 100 honored across New Zealand.
The organization also supports various community events, such as the Special Children’s Extravaganza, which takes place annually in August. This event provides a day of fun for families coping with challenges throughout the year. Last August, 24 students from Sacred Heart Girls’ College and Francis Douglas Memorial College volunteered their time to help set up and run the event, which has been a staple in the region since 1998.
Volunteering New Plymouth fosters a supportive environment for volunteer coordinators through quarterly morning teas, sponsored by Age Concern Taranaki. These gatherings facilitate the sharing of experiences and best practices among managers in the not-for-profit sector. Additionally, board members of various organizations are invited to similar meetings to discuss insights and connections within the community.
The final meeting of the year will take place at Starbucks, which is also a sponsor, celebrating International Volunteer’s Day. This gathering provides an opportunity for reflection and planning for the upcoming year, ensuring that the impact of volunteering remains a focal point in New Plymouth.
As the organization gears up for a year of recognition and celebration, it encourages community members to consider nominating deserving volunteers for various awards. With a strong emphasis on community spirit and service, Volunteering New Plymouth continues to highlight the importance of volunteerism in enriching the local area.
