New Zealand Masters Games Teams Up with MND NZ for 2026 Event

The New Zealand Masters Games (NZMG) has announced its partnership with Motor Neurone Disease NZ as the official charity for the upcoming 2026 event. This collaboration was revealed during the launch of the NZMG, where participants were encouraged to make donations during their registration process or directly to the charity.
Vicki Kestila, the Games Manager, expressed enthusiasm over the positive response from early registrants. “Registrations have only been open since September 10, 2023, and already the total donated is on the rise!” she noted, highlighting the community’s commitment to supporting those affected by motor neurone disease (MND).
Wayne Richards: A Personal Story of Resilience
The impact of MND can be profound, yet individuals like Wayne Richards embody resilience in the face of adversity. Diagnosed at the age of 70, Wayne’s journey with MND has not diminished his zest for life or his passion for sports. A former rugby player, he reflects on his days on the field with fondness and humor.
Wayne, who was born and raised in Christchurch, spent decades in the printing industry, transitioning into electronics as an expert. Despite his professional achievements, he emphasizes the importance of family and friends. “My family and friends have always come first,” he remarked. With five children, he enjoyed a life filled with activities and entertainment centered around his loved ones.
His sporting enthusiasm has not waned; although he now refers to himself as an “armchair critic,” he fondly recalls tackling opponents on the rugby field. “I tackled the biggest guys on the field and bowled them over,” he said, showcasing his indomitable spirit.
Facing Challenges with Humor and Positivity
Wayne’s journey with MND began with subtle signs—trouble walking and a noticeable limp. A pivotal moment occurred during a light-hearted interaction with his partner, Sharon, when he realized he could no longer jump on the bed. His general practitioner referred him to a neurologist, who ultimately confirmed the diagnosis. “I didn’t even know what it was. I felt numb,” he recalled.
In the wake of his diagnosis, Wayne chose to embrace life fully rather than merely coping with his condition. “I’m living the best life I can,” he stated. He connects with others facing similar challenges through a support group in Christchurch, fostering a sense of community. “We’re like a family of strangers,” he added, emphasizing the importance of shared experiences.
Now at 74, mobility remains Wayne’s primary challenge. He jokes about being a “furniture hopper” at home but relies on a power wheelchair for outings. Adapting to his condition has been crucial, from selling his car to purchasing a van that accommodates his wheelchair. “That’s how you adapt,” he explained, adopting a pragmatic outlook on life with MND.
Wayne’s perspective on his condition is refreshingly positive. “Sure, there are tough days. Days when you’re frustrated or sore or tired. But they’re just days. They don’t take away who you are,” he asserted. His approach underscores the significance of maintaining a sense of humor, which he considers essential for navigating life’s difficulties.
As the NZMG prepares for its 2026 event, the partnership with Motor Neurone Disease NZ serves as a poignant reminder of the human spirit’s resilience. The Games not only promote athleticism but also foster community support for those facing life-limiting conditions like MND. Participation and donations will help raise awareness and funds, directly benefiting those affected by this challenging disease.
For those interested in supporting Motor Neurone Disease NZ, contributions can be made through the organization’s website. Additionally, registration for the 2026 New Zealand Masters Games is now open, inviting athletes and supporters alike to join in this significant event.
