Oamaru School Celebrates Lunch Team’s Contributions as Contract Ends
Students at Te Pākihi o Maru in Oamaru expressed their gratitude on December 4, 2023, during a special assembly dedicated to thanking The Kitchen, a local company that has provided school lunches for the past four years. The assembly followed the announcement that the Ministry of Education has awarded the lunch contract to new providers, set to take effect in the upcoming year.
Community Support and Flexibility
During the assembly, students presented thank-you cards and flowers to owners Brony and Steve Pozzobon. The Pozzobons have dedicated ten years to serving school children, first managing the canteen at Oamaru Intermediate School and later expanding their services to four schools, including Te Pākihi o Maru.
Reflecting on their experience, Mrs. Pozzobon noted, “It’s been fabulous. It’s been nice having all the involvement with the schools, so it’s a bit sad.” She emphasized that being a smaller company allowed them to be more flexible with meal timings and menu options, enhancing their connection with the students.
Principal Stacey Honeywill praised the impact of The Kitchen on the school community. “The quality of food that we’ve had from these guys is fantastic. The kids eat them every day,” she stated. “They actually go above and beyond to make sure that what’s getting delivered is something that our kids will eat, not just a delivery of mass-produced meals.”
Variety and Student Favorites
The Pozzobons’ menu offerings have included a diverse array of options, such as sandwiches, wraps, pasta, wedges, and pizza. This variety has contributed to the overall satisfaction of the students, many of whom eagerly anticipate lunchtime. Osai Tukumoeatu, a student at Te Pākihi o Maru, shared his favorites, highlighting the appeal of the sandwiches and wraps.
As the transition to new lunch providers approaches, the community reflects on the lasting impact The Kitchen has had on the students and staff. The Pozzobons’ commitment to quality and engagement has fostered a supportive environment that will be fondly remembered.
The assembly not only celebrated the contributions of The Kitchen but also reinforced the importance of community involvement in school programs. The appreciation shown by the students signifies a deep bond between the school and its local partners.
